the book employs a symbol system inspired by motifs which can be found throughout traditional carpets along the historic rug belt. these symbols and what they represent are communicated in the key attached to the front cover. the symbols, applied in tandem with the featured carpet type, form a language of sorts which allow the reader to gather information about a particular type of carpet by reading the symbols referenced in the key. by no means does this serve as a comprehensive guide to every type of persian carpet, but the book can be used as an introduction to the extensive practice of understanding persian carpets.
